TPP Certification

Completing the CoS Teacher Preparation Program can result in one of three outcomes:

1) Eligibility for teacher certification by completing a regular science major and the STCH and subject methods courses (STCH courses).

This is the most popular route to becoming a science teacher with the students currently involved with the program. You stick with your science major, but take the STCH and subject area teaching methods courses in addition to the courses required of your major. You need not complete a science education degree to be eligible for science teacher certification in Arizona (or in most other states).

2) Eligibility for teacher certification by completing the new bachelor of science degree in science education with a major in science education (UA Science Education degree requirements).

With this route, you choose one of four major options: biology, chemistry, earth science, or physics. The STCH and subject area teaching methods courses are built into the degree as required courses.

3) A minor in science education that includes all of the STCH and subject methods courses, but excludes student teaching and the related seminar (UA minor in science education requirements).

Some science majors have interests in teaching and learning, but have no current plans to teach at the middle school or high school level. Some students may find this route appealing who are not “sure” about teaching, but wish to assure themselves that they need only come back and student teach in order to be eligible for science teacher certification.
